Cragg Farm

Cragg Farm is situated in the village of New Hutton, 4 miles from Kendal, Cumbria.
The family farm is run by Peter, Olive and David Knowles and extends to some 125Ha (300 acre), all within the Severely Disadvantaged  Area, all the land is farmed under a HLS & ELS Environment Stewardship Agreement.
The farm carries 170 head of cattle, the Kendalcragg Pedigree Holstein herd, some beef stores and breeding heifers.
The sheep enterprise consists of 420 Lleyn sheep all being pedigree & MV Accredited. The farm is FABBL Farm Assured. The farm produces genuine breeding stock which usually go on to do well for there new owners.

Sheep

The Flock of Lleyn Sheep are house prior to lambing in late March/April, 75% of the ewes are put to the Lleyn Ram the rest put to the Texel. Hoggs are lambed in April, with Lleyn hoggs lambing to the Lleyn Ram & Lleyn X Texel hoggs lambing to Blue Texel. Lambs are wormed and drenched during late spring & early summer along with Ovipast Vaccinations. Shearing takes place in June. All sheep are dipped in July. Lambs are weaned in August. Lleyn and Lleyn x Texel ewe lambs are prepared for sales in September. Lleyn Shearling rams are Society inspected and prepared for sale in September. Ewes are looked through in preparation for tupping. Prime lambs are marketed from July onwards.



Cattle

Dairy heifers are served with sexed semen and calved year round with the exception of a few weeks round lambing time. Calves are reared on milk with an aim to calve between two & two half years.

Land

Cragg Farm is an all grass land farm, rising to 1000 feet above sea level. Clamp silage is made for both Cattle & Sheep and a few big bales. All the land is within an ELS & HLS Environment Agreement.
